Creating Brochures: Captivate and Inform

Brochures are an important design element of "print" public relations. Brochures can inform audiences about a certain tourist hot spot or city attraction. While the information in a brochure is important, the quality of design is what attracts attention and captivates the target audience. A good design will leave the viewer wanting to learn more.

Aspects of a Brochure

There are many important aspects to a brochure design that PR professionals must adhere to. Like other forms of PR print designs, typography and color are important. For a brochure, you should use varying bolded styles to draw attention. Similarly, bright colors are good for attracting attention from your target audience. However, remember to stay on theme with your brand! I used different shades of orange across my design as well as a bolded font (Impact). More information on PR design here.

The most important design aspect of a brochure is balance! Remember to adhere to a theme, fonts, color palette and layout. Your design should be unique, but be recognizable as a part of your company's brand. Shapes are an interesting aspect I found to be important when working with brochures. I saw shapes to be an interesting way to section off information and create purposeful white space.

Designing a Brochure

When I started designing my brochure in Adobe InDesign, I found the layout tool to be very helpful. I split my page into three columns for a tri-fold brochure. Check out this post for more information on creating layouts in InDesign. Once I created a layout guide, I added various shapes to section off design elements. The colorful shapes will captivate viewers and draw attention to the important information. I found shapes to be a fun way to further separate the brochure.
